MeIn this short, sharp, comedy-under siege, the young couple Jenny (Haley Leary) and Lucas (Chris Mayers) are newcomers – or are they? – rural neighbors, having moved away from the big city. Lucas is a universal red flag ignorer, while by contrast, Jenny is adept at spotting the signs that something is off. When the mustachioed head of the local homeowners’ association Jerry (Julian Smith) invites the two to a party to celebrate the equinox season, he assures them “DIE!” in the tone of voice Ned Flanders would use in the Simpsons Halloween special. At the same time, Jenny asks a clear question: “Why do you say that?”

The roles are soon reversed at the landlord’s party, as a generous helping of moonlight overwhelms Jenny’s natural alertness, leaving Lucas to realize that he seems to be at the beginning of a horror film. Hold Fort jumps straight into the action, with the characters directly instead of the story or events, allowing the film to reach a lean 75 minutes – if you’re in the market for a movie you can start watching at 9pm and stay up all night, then that’s fine. On the downside, the letters drawn by the breeze don’t have time to find a place in anyone’s heart, which makes them weightless; it doesn’t seem like anything that’s happening here matters much, even though the group is crying out for surprise and surprise and experiencing gruesome deaths on a regular basis.

This is dangerous in the tradition of high-quality Internet comedy: if one joke doesn’t work, don’t worry, another one will in 30 seconds. Investing in the lives of individual characters doesn’t make sense; you can be just as happy with a happy death as with a successful survival. With enough years to keep things interesting, along with cheap but smart use, this is light but affordable and fun for the brand.
