Henry Pollock: Hat-trick for England against Fiji starts back row case for Steve Borthwick

There’s plenty more to the 21-year-old’s skills beyond those show-stopping scores.

Pollock has a huge appetite for work, going through mountains of ball-carrying and tackling Love’s title run for Northampton.

He is accurate and nimble around the breakdown, choosing his moment wisely to dive for a turnover.

But what sets him apart is his ability to be in the right place and at the right time when something is on, and to conjure up a moment when it isn’t.

Now the question is how best to set him loose.

Because a sky-high try-scoring rate – one every 56 minutes in Test rugby – will raise questions about how Pollock will play off Steve Borthwick.

Pollock’s only start in 12 England caps came against Ireland in this year’s Six Nations.

England was swamped that day. Pollock’s back row, at eight, with Ben Earle and Tom Curry either side of him, was beaten and fought back by Tadhg Beirne, Josh van der Flier and Kellan Dorries.

That back row balance was low in some complementary height? Would Ollie Chesham at six, Pollock at seven and Earl at eight be a better mix?
