England midfielder Jordan Henderson sparked a hilarious row ahead of their World Cup Round of 16 clash with Mexico in the early hours of Monday when he poked fun at the controversy surrounding the use of the drug Viagra to combat the effects of high altitude at the Azteca Stadium.
Henderson, who is participating in the World Championship for the fourth time, joked in the press statements. “Viagra helps,” an ironic reference to reports in recent days that the England team may be using the drug to combat the lack of oxygen caused by being 2,200 meters above sea level.
The veteran midfielder’s comment came after England coach Thomas Tuchel categorically denied the authenticity of this information, stressing:
Despite official denials, Viagra’s active ingredient (sildenafil) is used medicinally as a pulmonary vasodilator and may help alleviate the effects of altitude sickness caused by low atmospheric pressure and lack of oxygen at high altitudes, which explains the spread of these assumptions.
England are set to play one of the toughest World Cup matches in their history when they take on Mexico at the legendary Azteca Stadium, where the challenge is not limited to the opponent, but extends to the high altitude factor that causes breathlessness and lack of oxygen.
Tuchel emphasized that his team is aware of the difficult circumstances, saying: “We have to accept this shortcoming. They hold most of their meetings in Mexico. The first 15 minutes are crucial to withstand the pressure and we can’t complain.”
