Helen Housby: England star out of Commonwealth Games with back injury

Housby is one of only two active players, the other being wing attack Nat Metcalfe, who were part of that 2018 Commonwealth gold medal-winning team – and what a role he played.

The image of Housby – tongue blue from an energy drink – celebrating a last-gasp winning goal against serial winners Australia – to secure England’s first major title – remains an iconic one.

His absence from this year’s tournament in Glasgow is a major blow to a Roses side already somewhat lacking in major tournament experience.

Not only was Housby the first choice in England’s shooting circle, his leadership, determination and experience in winning were often crucial in driving the team.

At 31, Housby’s Commonwealth Games career may now be over. Replacing one of England’s most loved players will not be an easy task. Coming up with a Plan B for this summer presents Anna Stembridge with her first real test as the Roses’ new head coach.
