Hearts: Where will Derek McInnes leave Tynecastle?

There’s no doubt that McInnes was good for Hart, but the relationship worked both ways.

Player identification through Jamestown helped him build a team capable of challenging for titles and, in turn, enhanced his reputation.

He’s gone now, so where does the heart go from here?

The club and its fans may feel bruised, but in a few weeks, Hearts will be preparing for the Champions League qualifiers.

There may still be more changes. Devlin has yet to decide whether his future lies in Edinburgh, while forward Claudio Braga’s outstanding season is unlikely to go unnoticed elsewhere.

Hearts’ achievements last term attracted attention beyond Scotland and with Champions League football on offer, there is unlikely to be any shortage of interest in the vacant head coach position.

McGlynn is highly regarded by some at the club and was thought to have been a strong contender for the role 12 months ago.

A number of new signings will arrive for pre-season training and the dressing room will have a very different look and feel.

Shankland, centre-back Frankie Kent, Banningham and veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon have all left, while Devlin is yet to follow.

They are all influential figures, while centre-half Craig Halkett is unlikely to play before Christmas after suffering another long-term injury.

Whoever succeeds McInnes faces a significant challenge, with rebuilding confidence, trust and leadership within the squad among the immediate priorities.

Last season’s Hearts side set a benchmark for those that followed. Whether a new head coach and a new squad can match – or even surpass – what has been a remarkable campaign will undoubtedly be a tough challenge.
