A freak accident nearly killed him… so he came back to create the greatest moment of his career
In a story that transcends sporting boundaries to become an immortal human epic, Britain’s Francesca Jones wrote the most remarkable chapters of resilience and determination on Sunday to claim her first career Grand Slam victory after a legendary comeback from a set down and a break down to beat Brazil’s Beatriz Maia Hadda 6-7, 7-7, 4-7, 6-2 at the French Open. in the first round of the championship.
I was born against the impossible
Jones, 25, was born with a rare genetic condition called hereditary exocytic dysplasia with limb dysplasia (EEC), a complex medical condition for which doctors have repeatedly told her she should not pursue a professional tennis career.
But Jones defied all expectations, developing modified power to reach world No. 65 in 2025 and win the first WTA 125 title of her career, a feat that would have seemed impossible for a kid who left Bradford at 10 and moved to Barcelona to pursue her dream.
A terrible accident nearly ended the march
But the 2026 season turned into a real nightmare. After he was forced to pull out of the Australian Open in January with a torn hamstring, Jones suffered a horrific gym accident that nearly ended his career and threatened his life.
The leg press machine’s locking system failed and the 45kg weight fell straight onto his head and knee in a freak accident that sent him to hospital with a deep head wound.
“I was lucky that I didn’t need brain surgery.”
In a confession that reveals the extent of his surviving disaster, Jones says: “The doctors at the hospital told me that I was very lucky that I didn’t need surgery or have a brain bleed, given how the accident happened.”
But the nightmare didn’t end there, as Jones began to suffer from persistent concussion symptoms that included chronic headaches and severe dizziness that kept him out for weeks and out of the world’s top 100 after falling to 105th.
“The most difficult moment of my career”.
In a sad description of his experience, Jones said: “I think this was probably the most difficult moment of my career this year. It’s been a very turbulent year, two steps forward, two steps back.”
He added: “For me personally, if I feel ineffective, it’s very difficult for me. The emotional impact was just as impactful as the physical damage.”
From setbacks to historic victory
But after dropping to 105th in the world, Jones was able to qualify for Roland Garros after some of the top-ranked players in the main draw pulled out, so he made the most of the opportunity.
In an epic match, she came back from a set down and a break down against former top 10 seed Maya Haddad to claim her first Grand Slam win after six failures in the first round of four majors.
Tears of victory after a year of hell
The importance of this victory was clear for all to see as Jones cried and tearfully celebrated with his parents after overcoming one of the toughest times of his career.
“Usually I say you shouldn’t cry until the tournament is over, but I think after everything I’ve been through this year, it’s been really hard,” Jones said, his voice breaking.
He added: “It was very difficult for my parents. The whole concussion they were on the other side of the world. They fought me, even from a distance. For me, the emotions are less about the big picture, more about how difficult this year has been.”
“I will continue to play chess with myself.”
In a comment summarizing his philosophy of life, Jones said: “After I was able to come back and win the match, it got a little bit better. It shows that regardless of difficulties and misfortunes, I will continue to try to play chess with myself and find a way forward.”
A new confrontation in the second round
Jones now looks forward to facing world number 27 Marie Buzkova of the Czech Republic in the second round of Roland Garros to provide a fresh challenge for the champion who has never learned the meaning of giving up.
