Harry Kane proved his worth as the captain of the England team. After beating France (4-6) in the 2026 World Cup third-place match, the Bayern Munich player defended Thomas Tuchel, who will remain in charge of England until 2028 despite his controversial decisions in the semi-final against Argentina.
The victory over the French team, which gave England the bronze medal of the World Cup, partially softened the blow of the loss, but did not erase the memory of the semi-final match.
With Anthony Gordon’s goal making it 1-0, Tuchel seemed to have lost his nerve in front of the tango dancers. He removed his most popular players and strengthened the defensive line, ultimately losing the chance to qualify for the finals. The German coach has publicly admitted that he does not regret anything, but he has taken responsibility.
The German coach explained that he decided to switch to a defensive plan with five players because the spaces were too wide and that Argentina controlled the aerial balls. He believed that the collapse was not due to design, but rather to England’s inability to recover the ball, leave the half and control the flow of the match.
However, they fared better against France and Harry Kane acknowledged Tuchel’s influence on the team’s run which saw them achieve their best World Cup result since winning the title in 1966.
“He is most responsible for our best World Cup result in sixty years,” he said. “Just because he’s one of the best coaches in the world doesn’t mean he’s always going to be right.”
“The fans have every right to be angry and Tuchel knows that more than anyone. As players, fans and coaching staff, we all believed that this championship was ours. But this is football. When you dream big dreams, like we did, and you’re close to realizing them, the pain is as strong as it is now.”

World Cup 2030?
Kane, who is 32, looked to the future and spoke about the 2030 World Cup, which will be held in Morocco, Spain and Portugal, and which he will compete in at the age of 36.
