William Saliba does not hide the ambitions of the French national team at the 2026 World Cup and does not hesitate to talk about the match that he hopes to play more than any other match during the tournament.
Saliba started in the Roosters’ 3-1 win over Senegal on Tuesday night at the start of the teams’ trip to the World Cup, which is being hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The Arsenal defender has confirmed that the French side are aware of the level of expectations placed on them after reaching the finals of the last two World Cup games, noting that the pressure has become a natural part of the Roosters’ reality.
“France is always among the favorites to win the title. Everyone knows that and we are aware of the amount of pressure, but we deal with it and accept it.” He explained that the dream of winning the World Cup is always on his mind, even when he is busy with club competitions, adding: “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about the World Cup. Of course I think about it, and every player starts thinking about the tournament as it gets closer.”

When asked who are the most popular rivals for the title, Saliba listed the teams of Argentina, Brazil, Spain and England among the candidates, but he expressed a special desire to face one team.
The star of “Armors” said in an interview with GQ magazine. “All these teams are strong and dangerous, but if I had to choose one opponent, I would choose Argentina.”
The France international revealed that losing the 2022 World Cup final is still fresh in your mind, explaining: “When a team beats you in a game of this size, you want to face it again. You want another chance, and this feeling stays with you.”
Despite the pressure of wearing the France shirt, Saliba stressed that it is a source of pride for the players, not a burden. “It is a great responsibility, no doubt, but it is also an honor. Many legends of French football have worn this jersey before us.”
