The former City star is overcome with emotion after his son’s historic qualification
Manchester City star Alf Inge Haaland’s father looked like he was going to cry in the stands as his son Erling took Norway to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup with a decisive goal against Ivory Coast (2-1).
In the 86th minute in Texas, the Norwegian striker was in time for his country’s first win in the knockout rounds of a major tournament when Patrick Berg ran behind the Ivorians’ defense and sent a cross from the goal line that Holland left-footed from close range, sending thousands of Scandinavian fans packed into AT&T Stadium into a frenzy.
As Holland left to celebrate surrounded by his team-mates, cameras caught his father Alf Inge in the stands and the former Manchester City midfielder, who attends most of his son’s games, appeared emotional with his hands over his face before he burst into celebration minutes after the last referee blew.
Norway’s last appearance at the World Cup was 32 years ago in France 1998, when the Vikings failed to make it out of the group stage.
Haaland will now prepare to lead the Norwegian attack when the team face Brazil in the Round of 16 next Sunday morning.
