England captain Harry Kane has backed Thomas Tuchel to succeed as England head coach amid criticism over his tactics in the World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
Tuchel’s decision to switch to a back five after the final hydration break to try to maintain a 1-0 lead sparked widespread outrage as the Three Lions failed to hang on to Argentina’s pressure.

“There are a lot of ‘what ifs?’ After another night and it will take time to process. For him too. Just because he’s one of the best coaches in the world, doesn’t mean he’s going to get it right every time. The players on the pitch are the same. We all make mistakes and we have to try and improve.
“Supporters have a right to be angry. I think Thomas knew more than anyone when he took the job that it was high pressure and high stakes.
“He took us almost all the way and he didn’t. People will try and blame, that’s part and parcel of our job.

“I think he needs time to process everything. It’s been a crazy journey. A lot of ups and obviously a big down. It’s also his first tournament. He’s learned from the players, the pressure, the environment, the travel.

Why is optimistic about playing in the 2030 World Cup?
With a European Championship to contend with first, Kane is also hopeful that he will feature in the 2030 World Cup.
The Bayern Munich striker will be 36 when the tournament kicks off in four years’ time, but having broken the record for most World Cup goals by an Englishman this summer, the captain has yet to rule out involvement.
“I’m coming off the back of my best season ever and I’m turning 33. It’s impossible to say, four years away.
“I’ve said it before, playing for England is my biggest ambition. It feels as good as I’ve ever felt. Let’s see. I never put limits on these things. As long as I’m performing the way I’m performing, I’ll represent England. But, four years is a long time. I’m not getting carried away.”
Why should Kane and Tuchel be in the 2030 World Cup?

An element of semi-final disappointment is very strong as you wonder how long it will be before an England team is so ready to win big again, especially considering the question marks over some key figures swirling around the 2030 World Cup.
we know Thomas Tuchel has pledged to stay in charge for Euro 2028. There’s no guarantee he’ll be in the hot seat for two years after that. However, if he can lead England to glory on home soil, the idea of escaping the World Cup could be very tempting.
Although feelings towards him are currently mixed due to Argentina’s debacle, it would be the best case scenario if these situations pan out.
What about why? At 36, many would expect him to decline. Still, we just saw 39-year-old Lionel Messi light up the tournament. And the reality is, there is no clear player to take the mantle.
A major concern for the FA will be the lack of promising strikers coming through the ranks. Of course, a lot can happen between now and 2030, but all signs point to Ken still being relied upon as a number no.
The likes of Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Elliott Anderson and many more should be in their prime. Will it be enough to serve Kane who surely will not?
This is a unique debate surrounding England’s greatest player of all time. Right now, though, there doesn’t seem to be much point in the said debate without waiting for an obvious replacement in the wings.
