Former Manchester United star Owen Hargreaves has picked up a deal of the season as the Red Devils bounce back to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, who took over last January to replace Robin Amorim, managed to improve the team’s situation and was able to officially qualify for the Champions League by finishing third in the Premier League table.
Manchester United made several deals last summer The likes of Brian Mbwemu, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sisko, as well as goalkeeper Signe Lamines.
Hargreaves praised the influence of Kunya, Mbwemo and Sisko, but singled out Lamens as Manchester United’s most significant summer signing.
The Belgian goalkeeper was expected to compete with Andre Onana (before his departure) and Altai Binder for a place in the team, but he quickly overtook them to become the Red Devils’ first-choice goalkeeper.
“I’ll tell you who is probably the best out of all the contracts, Sean Lammens. How much was he worth? Not much, so it was a deal,” Hargreaves told TNT Sports.
He added, according to “Metro” newspaper. “I think United looked at it and thought: It’s not about a new midfielder or a goalkeeper, it’s about goals.”
He continued. “So they’ve added Kunya and Mbwemo, two players with Premier League experience who can score around 20 goals and United are currently third, so I think that’s proven.
“But I think if they didn’t solve the goalkeeping problem, they wouldn’t be in the top four.”
