Algerian commentator praises Egypt’s stars despite World Cup bye

Algerian commentator Hafid Draghi believes Egypt’s national team bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup after their dramatic defeat to Argentina, stressing that differences are measured not by names but rather by what is represented inside the green rectangle.

The Egyptian national team was eliminated from the World Cup, losing in a crazy scenario to the defending champion Argentina (3-2), in a match that witnessed many refereeing disputes, today, Tuesday evening, in the 1/8 finals of the tournament at the Atalanta Stadium.

The Pharaohs took an early lead with two goals in the 15th and 67th minutes through Yasser Ibrahim and Mustafa Zico. While in the 79th minute Christian Romero scored the first goal of the Argentine national team, Lionel Messi equalized the score in the 84th minute.

In the 90th + 2nd minute, Enzo Fernandez scored the decisive tango winner to send Argentina into the World Cup quarter-finals, pending the winner of Tuesday night’s Switzerland-Colombia match.

Draghi wrote on his official Facebook page. “Long live Egypt… Whatever your abilities and dreams, it was not easy for Egypt to eliminate the world champion and deny Lionel Messi from continuing his journey in the World Cup.”

“But the indisputable fact is that the Pharaohs were men on the field and they played a heroic game that will remain etched in the memory of Egyptian football.”

He continued. “Egypt crashed out of the tournament but emerged with their heads held high after making the world respect them and proving that the difference between giants is not measured by names, but by what is represented inside the green rectangle.”

He concluded. “Greetings to Egypt and its people… You have won the hearts of millions, even if you have lost your transit card.”
