The search is on for many unidentified people where the MV Barima sank on Saturday night.

Authorities in Guyana have increased the death toll from a boat accident that occurred last week off the coast to at least 41 people.

Officials said on Tuesday that 14 more bodies had been found by search teams, adding to the 27 reported dead the day before. MV Barima capsized at sea Saturday night.

77 people are said to have been rescued. Investigators continue to look to many unknowns.

The train was carrying 179 people when it went down, although only 133 passengers were on board, officials said.

Guyana’s Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, said the accident is the world’s worst maritime disaster in recent decades, saying that authorities are working hard to find the missing.

The government says 16 ships have been sent to the wreckage, with French and local officials leading the way.

The boat was traveling from the capital of Georgetown to Port Kaituma in the Essequibo region of Guyana when it capsized.

Officials have cited an incomplete passenger list and drug use among crew members as possible causes of the accident.

Police have announced that the driver of the train and one crew member have been arrested after being found in possession of marijuana.

“We do not tolerate our crew members drinking or smoking while at work. And for us to be tested by the captain, this is difficult,” said Edghill.

The ship was built in 1939, according to the ship’s website.

Boats often travel by sea before reaching the river to reach Port Kaituma, which is located in the middle of a dense rainforest.

Guyana, a small English-speaking country in northeastern South America, is embroiled in a dispute with Venezuela over the oil-rich Essequibo region.
