The Prince of Wales has reacted to England’s men’s World Cup semi-final defeat, writing that he was “confused” about their 2-1 loss to Argentina.
A statement shared by Kensington Palace read: “Your fight and belief inspired us all, the most complete England team in the competition.
“Keep your heads up,” he signed off with a “W,” a direct reference to the Football Federation’s patron, Prince William.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his dismay at England’s defeat, but added, “The passion and energy they showed in representing the badge made us all proud.”
Argentina scored two late goals to seal their place in the final against Spain in Atlanta after a goalless first half and England’s Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute goal.
The Prince of Wales has expressed his love for football, often seen cheering on Aston Villa FC.
“Thank you for your amazing competition on and off the field,” he said.
Sir Kiir’s final speech to the House of Commons as Prime Minister on Wednesday made several references to the nerve-wracking match for the England team.
“It wasn’t the result we all hoped for tonight, but this England team gave it their all,” Sir Keir said in a statement after the full-time whistle.
