Gunshots were heard at the Niger capital airport

In January, jihadists attacked the same airport as Niger has been battling militant Islamist rebels for a decade. Like its neighbors, Burkina Faso and Mali, Niger is ruled by a military junta that came to power in part because of its inability to deal with violence.
