Abrams’ report is called Daughter from Hell, a reference to her rebellious teenage years, and this leads to speculative enthusiasm.
The 26-year-old introspective and confessional pop star has been performing since the late 2010s, but her career really took off when she released her debut album, Good Redance, in 2023. That year, she supported Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour, and won a Grammy nomination for New Artist.
She achieved her first UK number one in 2024 with the deluxe edition of her second album, Our Secret. Anticipation for her new venture has been building since last year, when she debuted two new songs on tour – Death Wish and Cold Greetings.
They are marked by dark, gothic aesthetics, lyrical poetry and existential crises.
A Cold Farewell, in particular, is set to an unsettling synth drone sound – a world away from the gently plucked balls of her earlier work.
Unfortunately, it is an external situation. The music on Girl From Hell is mostly the same as before: low-key, whisper-soft, self-questioning, drifting and unnecessary.
The pianos are always muted, the drums seem like they’re all playing next to each other, and the orchestra buries Abrams’ voice in the frontal mix.
