Both competitions will feature 12 group fixtures. For us, we play every other team in the league once, and half the league twice (coincidentally, we play all the teams in the North twice, but I believe that’s random for all the other teams).
In the men’s game, there are three groups of six teams, divided geographically into North, Central and South. Each team plays both home and away once on each side of their group, as well as playing two random teams outside of their group (one home, one away).
The women’s final day – which was previously a top three competition – has now been changed to emulate the men’s final day with four teams
It will now consist of two semi-finals and a final as opposed to an eliminator and a final
And it goes without saying that the men’s final day – always at Edgbaston – is iconic, and something I’d like to see emulated in the women’s game in many ways.
However, I question the increase in the number of teams on the day of the finals. There are 18 teams in the Men’s Blast, so getting to the final four is definitely tough.
In contrast, the Women’s Professional Twenty20 Blast consists of only nine teams, meaning that almost half of the teams playing in the tournament will be present on the day of the finals.
That seems like a lot to me, though I’d feel differently if the Blaze finished fourth in the group stage.
