Google search is changing more than ever

Google Search is entering the next phase of its AI evolution. At Google I/O 2026, the company appeared search box reimagined which makes it easy to navigate between AI Overviews, the An AI-generated summary which appears at the top of the results, is AI Mode, Google search as a chatbot.

With the help of new Gemini 3.5 Flash modelGoogle’s updated search box optimizes long-form queries, while offering a new AI-powered autocomplete feature to build on your query. Robby Stein, vice president of Google Product for Search, said Seaside You will “reliably” see an overview of AI if you ask a natural language question. Asking follow-up questions in AI Overview will direct you to AI Mode, but you can also jump directly into AI Mode by typing documents, images, videos, and Chrome tabs into the search box and entering a question.

Liz Reid, vice president of Google Search, said in a press conference that the company wants to eliminate the “conflict” between AI Overviews and AI Mode. “We try to make it simple and easy, so that most users don’t have to think about where to go, they just go to the search box they’re familiar with and it feels like they’re going to get good information later,” Reid said.

The updated search box is available on desktop and mobile devices worldwide starting Tuesday. You can see regular results by selecting “Web” in Google Search.

Google is also moving forward it gets you googling. This summer, it will release AI information assistants to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers that can monitor topics when you’re offline. If you want to know when your favorite band is playing, for example, Google’s AI assistants can check upcoming shows in the background and notify you of changes. “You can sleep, and I’ll search, get information, do the work for you,” Stein said.

These new AIs can interact with your other Google accounts using Personal Intelligence, allowing them to pull information from apps like Gmail to adjust how they respond. The updates provided by the assistants look like the answers you would find in AI Mode, complete with text, web links, and videos. Google is expanding its AI-powered storage feature this summer, which will soon be able to organize local events and services for you. Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will also get a new feature that allows them to create “super apps” directly in Search. Subscribers can ask Search to create a fitness tracker at home, for example, and connect it to real-time information, such as the weather and your calendar. “This is the next generation of what it means to be Search,” Stein said. “This is the time for AI Search to be available to everyone and easy to use around the world, so they can ask anything within Google now.”
