More than a ten years since its inception and five years later Google found itThe Fitbit app is being replaced by Google Health. As part of the transition, Google also announced plans to sunset the 12-year-old Google Fit program at the end of this year, although more information about the migration of users to Google Health will be released in the coming months.
Google has released some interesting news updating the Fitbit app last year in beta modebased on the new AI-powered Health Coach chatbot that can give you guidance on anything and everything from your health to fitness, even analyzing your medical records. Now, a Health Coach is officially out of beta. Fitbit users will see an app update on May 19 that also changes the Fitbit app to Google Health.
“The money we’ve been making the last few years it was designed for this moment,” Rishi Chandra, Google’s vice president of health and home, told WIRED.
Although the app’s name has changed, Chandra says the Fitbit brand is still a big part of Google’s playbook: The company announced a new Fitbit in three years. Fitbit Air, which you can read more about here. Designed as a screenless tracker that is extremely light and comfortable to wear, it starts with the new Google Health app for simplicity at its core. Anyone—child, adult, or old—can easily understand the data the device produces.
“This combination of brilliant technology is something that has been missing for a long time, so we waited for Coach to be ready before introducing new equipment,” he says. “Now that we have Coach, you should expect to see more equipment coming.”
The Google Health app is designed to be a one-stop shop for all your health and fitness needs. It helps Health Connect and Apple HealthKit platformmeaning anyone who has Apple Watch they can use the Google Health app to view information. When you buy the new Fitbit Air for $100, Google is planning to make the device’s data also show up in Apple Health, although this won’t be available at launch.
The program allows you to enter medical records – you can search for your doctor’s name or address and enter the provider’s portal, which means that the past and future will be linked to Google Health. What’s more, you can log anything you need through Health Coach, whether it’s what you eat for lunch to keep track of your diet, or if you’ve broken your leg and want to revamp your weekly workout plan. Chandra says the app is designed for sharing, allowing you to share health information with family, friends, or a doctor.
