On Friday Google has announced it was to make the unknown features of Google Earth available to a wider audience. Google Earth for desktop has had a hidden navigation feature since 2007, but now it is easily accessible through a web browser without having to download or install any software.
To go to real space you have to open the Google Earth page then click on the “Explore Earth” button near the top right corner of the page. From there you will find the “Flight Simulator” option available as the last option in the top Tools section of the page. For more information, you’ll want to find an interesting part of the world to explore because the first place it brought me was in the middle of a featureless ocean. You’ll also want to make sure you’ve changed the default Google Earth map format from Map to Satellite to take pictures.
Google has shared a A help page that explains how to use your keyboard or mouse control your plane. Although the events are not as complex or realistic as you will find in games like Microsoft Flight SimulatorThe Google Earth simulator will still require some practice to point your plane where you want it to go without crashing. But if your flight ends without planning and the airport will stop and give you the opportunity to reset your plane to a safe place again.
