Air is not designed to stand alone as a data collector within Google developing an environmental health program. (The company also rebranded the Fitbit app as “Google Health.”) Built on Gemini, Health Coach is the brains of the system, promising personalized guidance based on your habits, goals, and biometric information. Instead of just displaying statistics, Google Health Coach translates them into actionable ideas. It can create exercise plans, show recovery windows based on stress and preparation, and monitor sleep disturbances. It’s designed to give you continuous learning that adapts to what you do.
Despite its stripped-down exterior, the Air retains the same tracking capabilities as the Charge 6. These include basic metrics like steps, distance, and calories burned, along with more advanced features like weekly Cardio Load and Daily Readiness scoring. It continues to track your heart rate 24/7, including alerts for irregular heartbeats that may indicate atrial fibrillation (AFib), alerts for heart rate readings or low heart rates, and heart rate monitor (HRV) detection.
Sleep tracking adds a bit more. The Air still offers Fitbit’s Personalized Sleep Score, but Google says the system—which is used by Google’s Gemini—is 15 percent more accurate than the previous model at catching distractions, falling asleep, and transitions between sleep stages. It also includes a Smart Wake alarm, which aims to wake users up in the best possible state of their sleep to start the day.
It’s worth noting here that although Health Coach is at the heart of Google’s health app, it’s a subscriber-only feature. Anyone can use the Google Health app for free, and if you have it a Fitbit device or Pixel Watchyou can continue to see your activity, sleep, and track your health. (Google also plans to provide support for more devices later in the year.) If you want to get a Health Coach or things like adaptive fitness plans, it will cost $10 a month ($100 a year) for Google Health Premium. You get three months free with the purchase of Air, and it’s included for everyone who signs up Google One subscription plans for AI Pro and AI Ultra.
If you’re already part of the Google wearables ecosystem, Air is designed to fit into your routine without fuss. Both Air and and Pixel Watch compatible with the Google Health app, meaning you can wear them at the same time or switch between them. Health information is automatically linked, and the app allows you to filter metrics by device. It’s a small but notable announcement that shows Google’s big attempt to unify its list and create flexible updates on a single health platform.
The new Google Health app will launch on May 19 for Android and iOS. Fitbit Air is available to order today and will launch on May 26.
