Google Chrome version 150 and 151, which are expected in late June and July, respectively, will cut support for the remaining versions of the old ad blocker, 9 to 5 Google reports. Google withdrawal of aid for additional ad blockers built into Manifest V2, such as uBlock Origin, in 2024. At that time, many Chrome users may have switched to Manifest V3 ad blockers like uBlock Origin Lite or switched to another browser.
Google is now removing the last code that references its Manifest V2 extension platform, so only ad blockers that work on the Manifest V3 platform will work in Chrome version 151 in the future.
Google developer Devlin Cronin comments on Chromium’s request to remove the last version of Manifest V2, explaining:
MV2 extensions are no longer supported in any supported version of Chrome, and we are removing support for them and functionality. We won’t be able to provide/maintain this functionality forever due to the complexity and technical debt, and the security risks it involves (we’ve found several bugs that are MV2 recently). Of course, other browsers can continue to support this feature if they wish.
