‘Golden Orb’ At The Bottom Of The Sea Came From A Mysterious Animal

These species can reach 30 cm in diameter and live between 1,600 and 4,000 meters deep. Its biology baffles experts because it doesn’t really conform to the rules that describe anemones and corals. Since its discovery, scientists have struggled to classify it, and its origins are still unknown.

Before learningthere was nothing to connect the golden cord with the great anemone. The report explains that early research found spirocytes—specialized cells found in cnidarians (a group of animals made up of anemones, corals, and jellyfish). This finding ruled out the possibility that it was an egg or a biofilm, as previously thought.

The team then sequenced the DNA of the objects to search for matches in the archives. The complete mitochondrial genome showed 99.9 percent similarity with Relicanthus daphneae. Evidence suggests that the orb is part of a rare and poorly documented anemone. However, the fossils did not match any of the known anemones.

To solve this riddle, the researchers looked at a sample collected years ago and studied it again. He found fragments of the golden ribs that the anemone had made around its stem. He then looked at living specimens and found that, while walking on the ground, R. daphneae they leave this cuticle, which remains on the rocks until they are broken off or buried.
