It only adds to what will be a very special game for Marshall, who is joined on the bowls team by his niece, Beth Riva.
“It’s a bit nerve-wracking really,” Marshall, 59, told BBC Scotland. “It’s not often I get a little emotional, but I definitely had tears in my eyes when I got out of the elevator this morning and all the athletes were there. It’s just a huge honor.”
Resplendent in full kilt on a blustery day, and possessively clutching a flagstick like a child would a favorite toy, the East Lothian bowler was in his element when speaking about the news on Wednesday.
Marshall admitted that he had to let it go for the evening before it came back before the big show.
But when that time comes, he may have to battle Adlington for the first shot. “And I will win that fight,” joked the 39-year-old heavyweight.
Adlington, who won judo gold in 2014 and 2022 and is looking to end his career by completing the treble, revealed the pair had known the news for weeks but had been sworn to secrecy.
“It was really difficult,” he told BBC Sport Scotland. “I was told I could tell my nearest and dearest but it would be a huge surprise for everyone else.
“I’m so excited. I was so nervous when I woke up this morning, and I think I’ll be even more nervous tomorrow. I might not sleep tonight but if it’s even half as good as 2014, it’s going to be amazing.”
