Young French rider Celia Gerry has won seven stages of the women’s Giro d’Italia.
Lucinda Brandt led round the final corner but 20-year-old Gerry got off her wheel and overtook the Dutch rider to claim her first stage win at the Giro.
The two were part of a six-rider breakaway that managed to hold off the peloton, which finished eight seconds back.
“It was a little weird being there but I was, so I just kept my cool and went for it,” Gerry said.
Italy’s Chantal Pegolo was third in the 159km stage from Sorbolo Mezzani to Salis Terme, while British riders Millie Couzens and Josie Nelson were ninth and 10th.
Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen suffered a crash with 55km to go but recovered to hold the overall race lead going into the final two stages.
Van der Breggen leads compatriot Demi Vollering by one minute, with Germany’s Antonia Niedermayer one minute 24 seconds ahead.
The final leg of the race on Saturday will be a 105km run from Rivoli to Sestriere.
It features the highest point of the race, with riders facing the 2,180m lap delle Finestre – before a summit finish in Sestriere – scene of Giro-winning attacks by both Chris Froome and Simon Yates.
