Norway’s Fredrik Doversnes won the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia after the final lap in Milan was abandoned due to riders’ complaints about race conditions.
The 29-year-old Uno-X Mobility rider was rewarded for his breakaway and crossed the line for the biggest win of his career, ahead of the three Italians – Mirco Maestri, Martin Marcellusi and Mattia Bais – as an expected bunch sprint never materialised.
Race organizers chose to neutralize the final 5 km for the general classification, a ruling that then extended to the entire fourth and final lap.
It was a surprising finish to a flat 157km stage from Voghera to Milan, which looked tailor-made for the sprinters.
The result means Jonas Vingegaard, who was among the riders to complain about the road furniture to the race commissioners, wears the pink jersey as the overall race leader.
The peloton will have a chance to rest on Monday before the start of the third and final week, during which Wingard will aim to secure the pink jersey.
“We all thought the circuit was dangerous. I don’t want to go into details but when we entered the circuit we spoke to the chief race commissioner and they made a decision,” Winggaard told RAI after the race.
“As riders, we have to be happy that they listened to us and I want to thank the organizers.
“Obviously we talked within the peloton. If I felt that way, it would have been different. But I could tell that everyone was of the same opinion, so I think I had some responsibility on my shoulders.”
He claims to have won the Tour de France twice Win the third stage Saturday’s 2026 edition and two minutes 26 seconds clear of Portuguese rider Afonso Eulalio.
