GERMAN MOTOGP: Marc Marquez continues to dominate the Sachsenring

Seven-time world champion Marc Marquez continued his dominance at the Sachsenring circuit with victory at the German MotoGP on Sunday.

The Ducati rider edged out younger brother Alex in Saturday’s sprint race and qualified fastest for Sunday’s race, which he controlled from start to finish.

The Spaniard was 1.996 seconds ahead of the rest of the field with Aprilia-Trackhouse duo I Ogura and Raul Fernandez second and third.

It was the 33-year-old’s 13th win at the German track, his 10th in MotoGP and it also equaled Italian legend Giacomo Agostini’s two records for most wins in a single event and most wins at the same circuit in the premier class.

“I’m very happy. It was a special weekend,” he said. “I knew I had to attack here to win the championship.”

Marquez, who underwent leg and shoulder surgery in May, started Sunday’s race strongly and his chances of victory were boosted when Alex misjudged a corner on lap 10 of 30 to drop from second.

The double weekend win means he is now third in the championship, 18 points behind overall leader George Martin, who was fifth on Sunday, and Ogura moves up to second overall.

Marco Bezecchi, who started the weekend second in the standings, failed to compete in both races after breaking his collarbone in a heavy fall during Saturday morning’s qualifying session.

The 27-year-old, who escaped injury after a 200 km/h (120 mph) crash in the Netherlands two weeks ago, will return to Italy for surgery and is now fourth in the championship.

The next race of the season is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday 9 August.
