George and Amal Clooney has been forced to evacuate his home in southeastern France as wildfires rage nearby, his aide confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday.
The Clooneys bought their hilltop estate, Domaine du Canadel, in Brignoles in the Var in 2021 and it will be their first home. Last December, the French government granted the entire family – including the couple’s nine-year-old twins – French citizenship.
In a letter to Didier Bremond, the mayor of Brignoles, the player wrote that “at the moment we don’t know if our beautiful house will survive this difficult time and while we are moving to Brignoles”, he wanted to “underline two things”.
“Firstly we believe that you and the people of our city are safe and secondly Amal and I are determined to make sure that whatever happens in our village, we will remain part of this community and (will help) rebuild. We love Brignoles and our friends there.”
The fire near Brignoles started on Wednesday afternoon and has burned 130 hectares (321 acres), authorities said. About 600 people were evacuated and four firefighters were injured.
Speaking to Esquire magazine earlier this year about his reasons for moving to the US, Clooney said neither he nor his wife, a respected human rights lawyer, wanted their children to be seen by the paparazzi or grow up with suburban myopia.
“A good part of my life growing up was on the farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of that,” he said. “But now, for them, it’s like — they’re not on their iPads, you know? They’re having dinner with the adults and they have to take their own plates. They have a very good life.”
