General Motors plans to introduce Google’s Gemini AI assistant four million vehicles across the US. The 2022 model year and new Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles with Google built-in will be eligible for the AI upgrade, which will be rolled out via a preview of GM’s infotainment system software “over the next few months,” according to GM’s announcement.
GM says this represents “one of Gemini’s biggest features on the market,” and that “customers will see an upgrade from the current Google Assistant to a smart, intuitive AI assistant that continues to evolve over time.”
The assistant can perform a variety of tasks, including messaging, navigation, music recommendations, and more. Upgrades to Gemini should also offer interactive features, allowing users to ask questions or make requests more naturally than memorizing specific commands. Gemini will first be available in US English, with GM saying it wants to expand “in additional GM markets and support more languages over time.”
GM has now passed another important milestone, announcing that nearly 750,000 Super Cruise vehicle customers have traveled a billion miles hands-free. The Super Cruise advanced driver-assist system it’s not autonomous — instead allowing drivers to take their hands off the wheel on connected roads across the US and Canada — but the experience suggests it could give competitors like Tesla a run for their money.
