Gemini is gaining the power of vision and walking. Today at the I/O conferenceGoogle and Volvo announced that the AI assistant will be able to access the external cameras inside The upcoming EX60 SUV helping to explain and interpret its location to car owners. The upgrade is possible because Volvo uses Google’s integrated Android Automotive as its operating system for cars.
Google says that its first use will be to ask Gemini to translate difficult-to-understand parking signs, although the company is also looking at other possible future projects. Google looks at the camera-enabled Gemini to remember a street sign, translate text, or even answer questions about nearby places or restaurants. The company says Gemini will be able to tell car owners how long to park at a particular spot, if they need certain permits, and other restrictions.
“In the future, Gemini will make your driving experience more efficient by allowing you to learn more about your surroundings while you’re driving,” said Patrick Brady, VP of Android Automotive at Google.
This isn’t just powered by Google’s Gemini; it also relies on the EX60’s on-board processing power thanks to the Nvidia Drive AGX Orin computing platform, as well as its over-the-air capabilities.
The interpretation of parking signs seems to be useful – as long as it is correct. Testing will determine if the system works as Google claims. I live in the New York City area, and parking signs are difficult to understand. But you can also imagine situations where a Gemini misinterprets a parking sign, resulting in a costly ticket or, at worst, a traffic jam. Google needs to make sure they nail this down, otherwise the owners will just stop it.
With the power of visualization, Google also says that Maps will be better at providing navigation. Volvo will be among the first automakers to receive it New Google Maps for Immersive Navigationhow the process is created in 3D with better graphics to more closely resemble the real world. With outdoor cameras, for example, Google Maps will offer more interactive options based on nearby locations, such as “go through this light and turn left to the library.”
