Gemini offers Google-owned cars

Google plans to replace cars with Google’s built-in Gemini AI assistant. This will be an upgrade from the current Google Assistant according to Google’s announcement, and promises to provide information about natural conversations, based on traffic information, updates, and more.

“When Google-enabled cars rolled out in 2020, we made a promise that your car will get better over time,” said Alankar Agnihotri, product manager for Google. he said in the announcement. “This means that Gemini is not only coming to new cars, but also existing ones through software updates.”

The announcement isn’t a complete surprise, granted General Motors already announced yesterday that Gemini was coming to 4 million models in 2022 with new cars, including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC cars. But Google didn’t mention any kind of support, which suggests that Gemini will be adapted for GM vehicles only. The release of these apps will start with English in the US and continue in the coming months.

The update should allow drivers to interact with chatbots, such as asking for nearby restaurant recommendations and playlist suggestions, instead of memorizing strict rules. Gemini can also summarize and respond to text messages, give you real-time updates about your trip, and answer specific questions about your vehicle – including EV information like the current battery level.

The upgrade process to Gemini will be visible to users who have their Google account in their car. Google says it plans to expand the upgrade to other regions and languages, and “give drivers access to information in apps like Gmail, Calendar and Google Home” in the near future.
