Sheikh Hamad bin ⁠Khalifa Al Thani, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, will be buried at the Lusail Cemetery in Doha.

Funeral prayers have been held for the Emir of Qatar, ⁠Sheikh Hamad bin ⁠Khalifa Al Thani, who died at the age of 74.

The funeral prayers for Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, followed Maghrib evening prayers after sunset on Sunday at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha.

Rows of men dressed in traditional Qatari clothing stood with their hands in front of them during the prayer, facing Sheikh Hamad’s body. Later, close relatives, including his son and successor as emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, carried his body outside the mosque.

Sheikh Hamad will be buried in the Lusail cemetery.

Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi said the event was a “humiliating event” and that Sheikh Hamad would be “buried in a simple manner”.

“This will be a simple Islamic funeral, a simple Islamic funeral,” Basravi said.

At the official funeral, which lasts until Wednesday, Emir Sheikh Tamim of Qatar will receive heads of state, dignitaries and members of the royal family at Lusail Palace.
