Fulham 2 – 0 Newcastle

Fans’ favorite Tom Cairney’s stunner saw Fulham style a 2-0 win over Newcastle in Marco Silva’s final game in charge.

Silva said he would sit down with the club hierarchy next week as the Portuguese’s contract expires at the end of June and Benfica are keen to bring him back home to replace Jose Mourinho this summer.

Whether or not he is in charge at Craven Cottage, he has at least signed on for this season in fine style, worthy of a win against a beleaguered Newcastle side who looked unrecognizable from the side that dismantled West Ham seven days ago.

Silva is not the only potential departure this summer with Harry Wilson and Raul Jimenez, both out of contract next month, given late cameos by the Fulham boss.

Conversely, there was no place in Newcastle’s line-up for Anthony Gordon, who was an unused substitute for the fourth game in a row – and was even overlooked late on for 18-year-old Shaun Neave.

Fulham found themselves well on top throughout but lacked clear-cut chances in the first half, capitalizing in the fashion they did when lively Kevin’s superb free-kick bounced off the bar, and Issa Diop took advantage of some settled Newcastle defending to concede the rebound.

Eddie Howe responded at the break by changing the formation and withdrawing Jacob Murphy for Harvey Burns, but things got a little better for him.

Instead, it was the arrival of Fulham midfielder Kearney that breathed some life into a game weary of the London heat. The 35-year-old fired a warning shot wide of the far post soon after his arrival but soon went one better from an angle, bending a 25-yard effort into the peach.

It ensured Fulham would finish the season above their visitors and ended a three-game winless streak for the Cottagers while Newcastle dropped to 12th, their worst finish since Steve Bruce’s final season in 2020/21.
