A big boost
Barcelona announced on Sunday that they have officially signed 21-year-old Catalan defender Martina Fernandez from English club Everton in a deal that marks the player’s return to his homeland after a year and a half absence.
The Catalan club confirmed in an official statement the activation of the buy-back clause, which remained in place when the player moved to England for around €150,000, where Fernandes signed a contract extension until the summer of 2029.
The official signing ceremony is scheduled to be held in the coming days at the club’s president Joan Laporta’s office, in the presence of Javier Puig, head of the women’s football department.
A rich history with the Blaugrana
Fernandez is a familiar face in the corridors of the Camp Nou, having made his first official appearance with the first team in the 2021/2022 season, aged just 17, under manager Jonathan Gerald.
During his first term, he played 22 matches, including 15 in the Spanish league, 12 of which he started in the starting lineup.
However, the 2024/2025 season saw him suffer a meniscus injury which kept him out for several months before he recovered and moved to Everton, where he initially joined on loan before the English club signed him permanently, with Barcelona retaining control over his future.
Strengthening the defense line
Fernandes’ return comes at a crucial time as Barcelona look to strengthen their central defense following the departure of Mabi Lyon and the continued recovery of Laia Alexandre, making the young defender a reliable alternative to Pere Romeu’s backline.
At Everton, Fernandez established herself as an indispensable player as she made 25 appearances in the Women’s Premier League, and now she returns with more experience and maturity and a real chance to secure a permanent place in the manager’s team.
Fernandez’s inclusion represents Barcelona’s third deal of the current summer transfer window, following the signings of Rene van Asten and Tyler McKamey as part of the club’s plan to strengthen the ranks of its women’s team.
