French singer and actor Patrick Bruel, facing charges of raping multiple women, was taken into police custody on Monday, as two new rape complaints were filed against him.
The 67-year-old, a French pop culture icon with best-selling albums and more than 40 appearances, is being questioned about 13 victims, the prosecutor’s office in the western Paris district of Nanterre said in a statement.
Three women accused Bruel of rape and attempted rape in 1997, 2000 and 2001, prosecutors said, while rape, harassment and other sexual assaults are also being investigated.
Bruel is facing two new rape complaints, filed on May 27 and June 3 by two women, their lawyer told Agence France-Presse on Monday.
The police can hold Bruel for questioning for up to 48 hours. He denies any wrongdoing and his lawyers said in a statement that “he will answer all the questions of the investigators and will give everything necessary to prove his innocence”.
He has canceled many of his upcoming tours, which were supposed to start in Paris this month.
Bruel is the latest in a long line of French film and music celebrities to face defamation allegations. Film history Gérard Depardieu he was sentenced to 18 months in prison last year. His appeal will be heard in November.
