French Open qualifiers 2026: Toby Samuel confirms first Grand Slam main draw appearance

Samuel told BBC Sport earlier this year that he did not feel fully fit until mid-2025.

He has gone from strength to strength since November, winning four Challenger titles – the second tier of men’s professional tennis – since November.

Now, he must prepare for the biggest match of his career after defeating the 185th ranked Bueno.

The Briton’s instinctive reaction to victory was to put his hands to his head in disbelief as he tried to process his achievement.

It was a second memorable comeback in as many days, with Samuel toppling American Martin Damm Jr – world number 112 and seeded seventh – in the first round to beat Goffin 5-7 6-3 6-3.

Samuel has never competed in a singles match on the ATP Tour, never mind a Grand Slam, but will now look forward to taking on his French Open first-round opponent on the game’s biggest stage.

He could still be joined by Britain’s world number 237 Felix Gill, who will bid for a first major singles appearance on Friday with Frenchman Kieran Jacquet, ranked 147.
