The past five years have seen Chowalinska working hard at the lower levels of the WTA Tour, diligently trying to improve her game.
Working to be able to mentally compartmentalize her career—which she associated with “pressure, stress and tears”—proved important from the rest of her life.
A year ago, Cwalinska was playing smaller tournaments in the Italian cities of Brescia and Bari after exiting the French Open in the second round of qualifying.

Chwalinska scored notable victories over former French Open semi-finalist Maria Sakkari and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, as well as three-seeded players in Schneider, Anna Kalinskaya and Elise Mertens.
Playing with variety and spin, Chowalinska can lob, drop shots and moonball her opponents, but she can hit the pace to finish points quickly.
“I feel like I’m in a bubble. I don’t know what’s going on. I’m so happy to be here,” said Cwalinska, who almost tripled her career prize money with a guarantee of winning at least £1.2m by reaching the final.
“After the tournament there will be time to process it and breathe, breathe.”
