Defending champion Coco Gough is the latest big name to bow out of the French Open after losing to Anastasia Potapova in the third round.
In a match with several big swings in momentum, American fourth seed Goff lost to Austria’s Potapova 4-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-4.
Victory over two-time Grand Slam champion Goff meant Potapova reached the fourth round for the first time at Roland Garros.
Goff followed men’s top seed Janic Ciner and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic as they were knocked out in the first week in Paris.
The 22-year-old beat Aryna Sabalenka in last year’s final but comes into Roland Garros in 2026 without a title.
Potapova’s excellent defense caused problems for Goff and the 25-year-old grabbed her shoulder after the match, after several bruising rallies.
“I’m having a little pain but everything is fine, everything is fine. I have no words now, I’m very happy,” said Potapova.
“The fight we both can show – Koko is a champion and I respect her a lot.
“I’m incredibly proud of myself that I hung in there, that I was fighting until the end.”
Potapova will play Russian 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya in the last 16 after a 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 win over Camila Osorio.
