“I want to thank myself.”
This was the phrase emblazoned on Mira Andreeva’s jacket when she won her first Grand Slam title at the French Open.
After dominance 6-3 6-2 win Maja Chulinska, who became the first 19-year-old Roland Garros singles champion since Monika Sels in 1992, had a long list of accolades in Polish qualifier Maja Chulinska Andreeva.
She began by expressing her gratitude to Chawalinska before moving on to the tournament organizers and her team – including her coach, former French Open finalist Conchita Martinez.
But Andreeva gave the last – and most important – thanks to herself.
“I want to thank myself for believing in myself,” she said.
“To give 100% even when it’s hard, trying to get better as a person and a player every day, believing I can do it, fighting a lot of demons inside me.”
“I’m the only one who knows how hard it is for me and how stressed I’ve been in the last two weeks, so thank you for working hard and giving it your best.”
Andreeva congratulated herself after her many title wins – twisting a quote from rapper Snoop Dogg saying she “stole it”.
“At first I said it so everyone would laugh at how funny I was,” Andreeva said.
“After that I realized: Why don’t you praise yourself? Because you are the one doing it, you are the one doing the work, you are the one feeling all the nerves.”
