Teenager Mira Andreeva won her first Grand Slam title as Polish qualifier Maja Chulinska was denied a fairytale French Open triumph.
Andreeva, 19, lived up to her long-standing potential with a 6-3 6-2 win over an opponent who was 500-1 before the tournament.
Russian eighth seed Andreeva is the youngest woman to win a Roland Garros title since Monica Seles in 1992.
After securing the victory in one hour and 22 minutes, Andreeva fell to the court in joy and quickly ran to the stands for a warm hug with her coach Conchita Martinez.
Andreeva overcame a tense start, with nerves and a swirling wind leading to four straight breaks of service.
World No. 114 Chualinska won the match – much to the delight of the 15,000-strong crowd.
Despite thousands of Polish fans cheering on Chwalinska, Andreeva showed her maturity to keep her composure and win the next 9 games to take a 6-3 5-0 lead.
There was even more tension when Andreeva fell short on the first try, but recovered with a backhand to win her first championship point on Chawalinska’s serve.
