Spain’s Alejandro Davidovic Fokina says his coach abandoned him midway through his French Open campaign and flew to Miami without a word.
The 21st seed was asked at a press conference about France TV reports that he had fired his coach Mariano Puerta following an argument following his first-round win over Damir Dzumhur.
“We didn’t fight. Everything was normal,” said Davidovic Fokina, who lost to Thiago Augustin Tirante in the second round on Wednesday.
“After the match against Jumuhur we had lunch and then I got cold.
“He said he felt bad and was going to the hotel.”
Davidovich Fokina said he received a text message hours later from Puerta – runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros in 2005 – saying he was “not going to continue”.
“He didn’t tell anyone, the team, he just took the flight and flew to Miami without saying a word to us,” Davydovich Fokina said.
“My wife called (him) on the phone, me too, so I don’t know.
“He goes about his life and I’m with mine. If he acts like this at 45, that’s his decision.”
