By next year, Fox Corporation CEO Lachlan Murdoch he wants to add A year to his kingdom that has already grown. If the acquisition goes through, Fox will inherit Roku’s library of original programsand the newly merged company will be “the third largest player in US television” in terms of viewing share. But the most important thing that Murdoch buys with this deal is direct access to 100 million houses which forms the basis of Roku.
It’s because Roku and Fox are very different types of companies that a merger between the two could have a huge impact on our modern media landscape. Murdoch is keen to keep up with the trend — the platform will remain “open” and “peer-friendly,” according to the announcement — but it’s yet another example of a corporate merger that could change what consumers see, perhaps without realizing it.
Fox’s desire to acquire Roku makes sense when you remember how long Murdoch has been around trying to establish a strong presence in running battles. In 2020, Fox bought it free, ad-supported platform (FAST). Pipesand last year, the company launched its own volunteer registration service focused on news and live sports. Following the merger news, Murdoch he told investors that they want Fox and Roku to operate as two separate entities. The Roku Channel (Roku FAST’s signature service) may not be made available on Tubi, but Murdoch has plans to turn Roku into a gateway to all things Fox.
Both Murdoch and Roku founder, chairman, and CEO Anthony Wood have made it clear that Fox-branded content will be more prominent on Roku’s home page after the acquisition. Wood told investors that “boosting Fox’s assets and Roku’s home use” is an important part of the company’s strategy to increase profitability. Murdoch added that he expects Roku viewership to grow in the U.S. primarily because of Fox’s presence on the service. Movies and series produced by other companies will not disappear from the platform because the size of Roku’s current library is a big part of its appeal to consumers. But it seems likely that Fox Sports and Fox News will be among the first things people see when connecting to Roku’s technology.
The beauty of Roku as it is now and all its simplicity compared to its competitors. When you open the Roku app, it presents you with a few advanced options, a list of other streaming services you can access through Roku, and one big ad — all of which make it seem like the interface is gently trying to help you find things to watch. But during their earnings call, Murdoch and Wood confirmed that they wanted to generate more advertising revenue from Roku’s home airing of Fox content. And such a push could turn Roku into a place that feels more aligned with its own politics.
Roku’s value is based on its fundamentals and consumer perspective
Murdoch is trying to do something different from Roku, whose value is in its infrastructure and consumer observation data unlike the movies and series that you make. Murdoch may not have strong competitors like Apple and Amazon to launch programs that align with his political views. And removing third-party subscription services from Roku could drive consumers to other streaming devices. Instead, it looks like Murdoch wants to use Roku’s digital platform to expose Fox’s content to as many audiences as possible. It’s hard to imagine anyone using Roku suddenly becoming Fox News, but most people do they will check if the platform makes the software easily accessible.
This — millions of viewers binge on Fox content because it’s delivered to them — makes perfect sense given how Roku has already established itself in the viewing space. People didn’t buy their Roku TVs thinking they were calling Fox Corporation into their home. But here’s how it will all shake out if Murdoch gets his way. Because of Murdoch’s ties to Trump and these authorities committed to pushing the media to the rightit seems that Roku will soon become a Fox company. And while consumers can’t do anything to stop a deal, there are other platforms they can jump to.
