Arcangel Pretel Ortiz, Antonio Intriago, Walter Veintemilla and James Solages were found guilty on Friday of conspiring to kill or kidnap Moise, whose killing has left chaos in the Caribbean country that has caused many security and public problems.

They were also charged with financing the conspiracy to violate the laws of the United States. All four have been sentenced to life in prison.
US prosecutors say South Florida, the US’s closest neighbor to Haiti, served as a central location for planning and facilitating Moise’s assassination.
During the trial, which began about two months ago, the defense attorney said the accused were scapegoats.
He said he was instead involved in a plan to authorize Moise’s arrest, amid controversy over whether the president had overstayed his term.
They continued to say that Colombian army those involved in the killing had to accompany the Haitian police to give permission, but that Moise was killed by his security guards before they arrived.
“This is a Haitian attack, and it is a Haitian attack,” defense attorney Emmanuel Perez said, as reported by the Miami Herald.
Prosecutors in the United States, too, said that the men initially wanted to remove and remove Moise, but the plan escalated to murder.
A fifth defendant, Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a Haitian-born doctor who wanted to be named president after Moise’s assassination, was tried for a later trial on health grounds.

No national elections have been held in Haiti since Moise’s assassination, although an interim council was elected in September 2024 to prepare for new elections.
The council was replaced by the Prime Minister of America, Alix Didier Fils-Aime, who said that elections will be held at the end of the year.
The UN says a stable government is necessary to restore stability in Haiti, which has been plagued by natural disasters and increasing violence, with terrorists controlling large areas.
At least 8,100 terrorist killings were recorded in 2025, and insecurity displaced nearly 1.5 million people, according to the UN.
