Some Argentinians, including Alpine Formula 1 driver Franco Colapinto, are still struggling to come to terms with losing to Spain in the World Cup final.
The newspaper publishedSportsFranco Colapinto’s comments to ESPN, where he attacked the Spaniards’ celebration after their win over Argentina, describing it as “shameful”.
“The spread of Spanish jerseys during the World Cup, they suddenly started wearing them when they won, not before, is a shame,” he added.
He continued. “They don’t even have songs to sing,” referring to Argentina’s popular song culture, which is known for creating songs for big occasions.
He also noted that he had heard about attempts to burn Messi’s jersey before the journalist changed the course of the conversation when he felt the discussion was starting to take a more sensitive turn.
Looks like a war between Argentina and Spain
At a media session with Spaniards Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Colapinto returned to talk about the Spaniards’ celebrations.
“They are worthy champions, but I hope they improve their songs a bit, they need to be more creative, it was boring,” he said.
He also spoke about the tension between the Spanish and Argentinian fans after the game, adding: “We are two Latin countries, which is great, but there are differences that make it seem like we are enemies.”
He continued. “Messi played for Barcelona and gave the Spanish fans many happy moments, but now it seems like there is a war between the two countries, and it’s not pretty.” I don’t think that burning Messi’s shirts is right.
Colapinto was not the only Argentinian to criticize the way Spain celebrated, with some in Argentina believing it lacked enthusiasm compared to what fans are used to.
On the other hand, many in Spain note that the style of the celebration reflects greater awareness and self-control, without diminishing the value of the achievement or the amount of joy of being crowned.
