Former New Zealand coach Ricky Herbert has stressed that his country must remain calm and committed and find a collective way to limit the threat of Mohamed Salah if they are to capitalize on a historic opportunity against Egypt at the World Cup.
New Zealand are looking forward to their first ever World Cup win after being held to a first-round draw by Iran with two goals from each team.Limiting the Egypt captain’s impact in Sunday’s match in Vancouver could be the key to this historic achievement.
Herbert, who captained New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, explained that the issue required finding a balance between narrowing the spaces for Salah without going overboard in assigning players to control him.
Herbert said: In statements to Reuters“He’s a world-class player, so you have to respect him. If he manages to put the New Zealand players in one-on-one situations, he will make life very difficult. On the other hand, they should be careful not to crowd around him too much for fear of leaving space elsewhere. So it has to be about ensuring that we can protect, organize and play with ourselves. that killer is passing by.”
Herbert said the attacking partnership of Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush will be a major test for New Zealand’s defence, noting that he sees Egypt as a more difficult matchup overall than Iran.
However, he expressed confidence that Egypt will also show New Zealand due respect after their draw with Iran, saying: “The Iran match was a good step for the team in the World Cup and a good way to introduce themselves. They could probably get three points against Iran.
Herbert’s New Zealand side won huge praise in South Africa when they exited the tournament unbeaten after the group stage.
Herbert will be in the audience in Vancouver on Sunday, confident that victory awaits if the players can relax and enjoy the moment.
He concluded. “I will tell them. Be sure to enjoy the moment because you don’t want to put any outside pressure on the meeting. Will it be a tough match? Yes, it will. Do they have world class players? Yes, they have. But you’re at the World Cup, the biggest sporting event in the world.
