Ford says it has rehired some human engineers because it could not match their skills and experience.

To reap the benefits of the technology, which developers say can cut costs and boost productivity, the US automaker has taken it out on parts of its operations, including quality inspections.

But, According to Bloomberg, ExternalIt has hired more than 300 “veteran” quality inspectors in recent years to offset problems with automated systems, executives said.

“Artificial intelligence is a wonderful tool, but it’s only as good as the data you use to train it,” Charles Pohn, vice president of vehicle hardware engineering, told reporters.

“In previous years, we didn’t pay as much attention as we should to the experience of our very knowledgeable engineers who have been with us through many product cycles,” he said.

The US automaker is one of many that have seized on the buzz around AI, particularly on Wall Street, for the technology’s potential to boost margins.

“AI has left a lot of white-collar people behind,” Ford boss Jim Farley said in an interview with author Walter Isaacson last June.

This includes deploying 900 AI-powered cameras in the plant “to help us detect quality issues at source and address supply disruptions,” Galhotra told investors.

But Poon told reporters on Wednesday that the company’s AI-driven checks failed to live up to expectations.

“Wrongly, we thought that by introducing artificial intelligence and internalizing our existing design requirements, it would produce a high-quality product,” he said.
