Fireworks in Milan as Inter won the Serie A title with a 2-0 win over Parma | Football News

Inter Milan have won their 21st Scudetto, leading Napoli, with three games remaining in the Italian league.

Celebrations erupted in Milan after Inter clinched the Serie A title with a 2-0 victory over Parma, sending thousands of supporters into the streets.

Piazza del Duomo was filled with fans dressed in blue and black on Sunday, after the final whistle at the nearby San Siro, as flares and fireworks lit up the night sky.

Marcus Thuram opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time before Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored 10 minutes from time. The champions climbed to 82 points and won their 21st Scudetto with three matches remaining in the campaign.

Inter went into the game knowing a point would be enough as second-placed Napoli were held to a 0-0 draw at Como on Saturday, and their result the following day left them 12 points clear at the top.

Despite a lack of clear chances, Inter dominated much of the first half and established themselves inside Parma’s half.

The hosts went close in the 25th minute when a powerful shot from Nicolo Barella hit the bottom of the bar. The rebound hit the back of Parma’s Zion Suzuki goal, but the Japan international reacted quickly to keep the ball close to the line to keep it out of danger.

Thuram caused a frenzy among the home fans in first-half stoppage time, slotting home after being unmarked by Piotr Zielinski’s through ball to give Inter the lead.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Inter almost in control but unable to capitalize as the supporters inside the stadium focused on the clock ticking away in the 90th minute.

Federico Dimarco delivered a close cross to Denzel Dumfries at the last minute, but the defender failed to control his first touch, sending a low effort over the bar and missing the chance to seal the game.

Mkhitaryan sealed victory 10 minutes from time, curling in a low cross from Lautaro Martinez to secure the points and spark heady celebrations among the Inter supporters.

For Inter, the win provided redemption after a difficult season last season when the club lost the Serie A title on the final day of the match before being beaten 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.

“We feel very happy now. It was not easy to start again after the season in which we lost all the competitions we had at the end, but I am very happy today with this victory,” said Martinez.

“It was an important goal for us, maybe a lot of people didn’t see us as favorites considering what happened last term, but we worked hard on and off the pitch.”

The situation in the Italian city was very different from a year ago when the fans experienced the pain of losing the league title to Napoli on the last day and the final defeat in the Champions League.

“I have no words. Even everyone who messed us up from start to finish. Go to Inter, always,” said Fabio. Amazing. Amazing. And compared to how it ended last year, this year we have to do everything.

Many fans were seen shedding tears during the celebration.

“It was worth it. It was a difficult season in the league to begin with because it was always neck and neck,” said Inter teammate Federico.

The celebrations are expected to continue with the Coppa Italia final on May 13 when Lazio will stand in the way of a double for Inter.
