Firefox is working on an all-round redesign with easy-to-access privacy controls and AI

Firefox is getting a major facelift with a redesigned Settings section that will make it easier to access and use privacy settings, including switch to disable all current and future AI features. Mozilla calls for an update “Project Nova” and plans to begin production later this year. It features an all-round UI, including bubble-like tabs, and a refreshed, fire-inspired color scheme. Mozilla says it’s updating images so they look the same on light and dark themes.

Firefox’s AI features and colors are not downloaded to your computer unless you choose to use them, even if you haven’t turned on the full block in the settings. But if you have anything else installed, it’s easy to see which ones are, and how much space they’re taking up, compared to Google Chrome’s arguments. 4GB download.

Although the update isn’t coming until later this year, Mozilla also announced a new update on Thursday that’s available now: Web Serial API support. As Mozilla puts it: “For example, websites can control hardware or deploy firmware without requiring native software or installers.” The new API is part of the Firefox 151which was released this week and includes an updated design for the Firefox Home Page, new wallpaper icons, and an update option merge multiple PDFs together in the browser’s PDF viewer.

On the productivity side, the new design also brings Firefox’s compact mode, which helps control the browser like the front and back buttons. The redesign will also make it easier to find tab groups, split views, and vertical tabs.

Project Nova will also include a lot of customization, starting with new graphics and themes. The new color themes will work across the entire browser screen and have light and dark colors, similar to Chrome’s color themes. Mozilla’s blog post says it is “reviewing” the controls for the appearance of tabs and other UI elements.
