Firefighters could be ‘days’ on the Dove Stone reservoir fire.

Firefighters say it could take days to put out a huge blaze on Greater Manchester Moorland on Saturday.

The fire at Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield Saddleworth has now joined Tintwistle Moor, near Glossop, several miles away.

Clive Stanbrook, from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS), said it was spreading due to dry conditions and “ever-changing winds”.

Crews are “doing everything we can to keep this fire from spreading,” he said, including dropping water from helicopters and conducting reconnaissance with drones and aircraft. A 20-year-old woman has been brought to court accused of arson.

of A bonfire broke out on Tintwistle Moor in Glossop on June 24 and Sunday was declared a major event. The DFRS said firefighters were facing “difficult conditions”.

Stanbrook said: “There were two helicopters dropping water, but we did reconnaissance.

“The mountain rescue was absolutely fantastic and we brought in their drones. We also had a Coast Guard plane to scout the exact area.

“This is just a taste of the scale we’re dealing with right now.”

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) area manager Ben Levy said: “I expect our firefighters will be on these moors for a few days, I’m sure – there’s no significant rain forecast, given the high temperatures.

About 70 firefighters, 11 fire engines and four fire units were at the scene on Tuesday.
