A fire, one of many in Spain, reached the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex on Friday, forcing the evacuation and temporarily halting work at one of NASA’s most important facilities.
The observatory is part of NASA’s Deep Space Network, which works with similar observatories in California and Australia to show the world how the Earth’s orbit brings up planets, stars, and deep space probes. The network supports more than 40 missions from the Moon to the ends of the Solar System, including Artemis, the James Webb Space Telescope, and NASA’s Voyager twins.
A NASA spokesman confirmed the tracking site in Spain, located in the mountains about 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of central Madrid, was being monitored on Friday “due to a wildfire that continues in the area.
